Research in medicine shows that oral chronic periodontal infection and inflammation is a serious health problem associated with heart disease, diabetes, stroke and many other heath conditions. The Academy of Supra-gingival (above the gum) Healthy Dentistry promotes a modality, or style, of dentistry that uses the latest materials and innovative techniques to intentionally keep restorations such as fillings, crowns, veneers, onlays, etc. above the gum line, thus avoiding periodontal infection and inflammation. Supra-gingival healthy dentistry uses minimally-invasive techniques available for the purpose of providing patients with a healthier form of dentistry and minimizing negative side effects like root canals and pain (Figure 1, patient with 15 year old supra-gingival veneers and healthy gums.) Healthy Dentistry also means biocompatible (not harmful to living tissue) dentistry and therefore the Academy of Supra-gingival Healthy Dentistry also strives to use and encourage the use of materials and techniques that are healthy and biocompatible to the patient. Traditionally, severely damaged teeth are cut down before being treated with fillings or crowns with margins below the gum line, which is invasive and often leads to unhealthy gums (Figure 2, patient with crowns and generalized periodontal disease.) By using modern dental adhesives and materials, the dentist does not need to drill too much of the tooth or go below the gum level (sub-gingival). Supra-gingival techniques can be applied to every procedure in dentistry.
"The Academy of Supra-gingival Healthy Dentistry was passionately founded with an ambitious objective to spread and promote the knowledge and practice of supra-gingival minimally invasive dentistry. We are an organization of caring, educated, motivated and health-conscious clinicians who have created a platform with a goal to inform the public of healthier dentistry by providing a reservoir of educational, academic information on Supra-gingival healthy dentistry, as well as a place to allow patients to communicate with a dentist near them who is knowledgeable on such techniques."
